Why this exists

You can't tell which tricks are real

Hello, I'm Mags. You've watched the clips. "Say this one word and they can't refuse." Some of you have told me what you think of them: This is FAR too simplistic. Others want the real thing: I'd like to be better at reading people.

Both are right. Most persuasion tips start from a real study, then lose the part that matters: how many people were tested, how big the change was, and whether anyone got the same result again. So you try the trick on your manager, it falls flat, and you decide psychology is rubbish.

I went back to the papers behind seven of the moves those clips sell. I kept what held up, graded each one Solid or Shaky, and wrote the exact words for three places you need a yes: at work, on a date and at home.

The best-tested line in the guide

Overselling makes people defend their freedom by saying no. One plain sentence at the end of your ask takes that reason away. A 2013 review pooled 42 studies with 22,032 people, and this line roughly doubled the odds of a yes.

Before

"Would you look over my pitch before Friday? It really matters, and you're the only one who gets it."

After · Solid

"Would you look over my pitch before Friday? No worries at all if you can't fit it in."

Who made this

Second Read exists because I got tired of tips with a famous name stapled on and no study underneath. A claim doesn't become true because someone important supposedly said it. If the evidence is thin, I say so, even when the tip sounds good.

Isn't this just manipulation?

Every move here works best when the ask is honest, and the best-tested one hands people the choice to refuse. Each page also shows what the move looks like when someone uses it on you, so you can spot it. Moves make yes more likely, not certain, and a no is still an answer.

I've seen these tricks in videos. What's new?

The numbers the clips leave out. You get the sample size, what really changed, and which moves shrank when other researchers retested them, so you know which ones to lean on.

I'm shy. Will I actually use this?

Each move comes with one ready line for work, a date and home, short enough to say as written. The one-page sheet fits on a fridge or a phone screen.

How do I get it?

Enter your email and the 15 page PDF is ready to download right away. It reads on a phone, and the sheet and ledger print on one page each.
